To prepare well its excursion MTB

An excursion even of a day is not improvised and a minimum of preparation will avoid you certain vexations!

Choice of the route

First of all, gold rule, never not to over-estimate its capacities (distance and difficulties). Chart IGN is an inexhaustible source of information on the type of ground which you will meet with MTB.
It makes it possible to discover interesting sites and places on your route but also contours, the layouts, etc. The more contours are brought closer, the more the uneven one is important. The spaced curves will indicate a planer area to you. As soon as a way cuts one of these lines, you will find yourselves vis-a-vis a slope (or coast according to the direction of the curves). While skirting one of these curves, the advance will be less difficult.
Chart IGN will also enable you to locate the calm and ignored footpaths.
Thanks to its legend, you will be able to visualize the wooded areas, the meadows, etc.
The most detailed charts and best drawn are undoubtedly the charts with the 1/25.000°.
Slip possibly your chart into an impermeable plastic small pocket which you will fix on the clotheshanger.
One does not think of it always : it is to better turn with the sun to be unceasingly in full back-light (thus choose well the direction of your route).
Also avoid the large difficulties at the end of the course.
You can also inform you in the tourist offices to know the footpaths marked out of the area. It is a good means not to be mistaken and they are often extremely pleasant.
On these ways, you will be guided by a sign which you know :
The point of the arrow always indicates the direction to be followed.

WHAT TO TAKE WITH YOU

A good rucksack, light and comfortable. Make sure you don't put too much in : the heaviest things should be at the bottom. Tighten the waist band so that your hips take most of the weight. The braces shouldn't constrict your chest but should keep the rucksack from bouncing about. Nothing hard should press against your back.
Enough to drink.
Energy bars.
Bags for your rubbish.
A small medicine box (sticking plasters, sterilised pads, disinfectant, etc).
Sun-cream + a cap, scarf or hat.
A wind-breaker.
A set of Allen Keys , flat head and cross-head screw-drivers (on sale in sport shops for around 3€).
A bicycle repair kit and small pump.
Compass and large scale map.
Some money.
Camera and film…small and light.
Mobile phone/telephone card (just in case you've a problem).
Always remember that carrying too much weight could be your worst enemy.
